The Depeche Mode Chair | Molded Ply & Tubular Steel

Rhythm in repose. The Depeche Mode Chair is a striking interplay of industrial tension and organic warmth. Designed by Peter Fossick, this piece sketches a continuous line in space, balancing the strength of dense-walled steel with the fluid elegance of veneered birch ply.

Product Description

The Depeche Mode Chair captivates with kinetic energy. Drawing inspiration from the fluidity of sound waves and the structural daring of neo-modernism, the design features a sweeping tubular steel frame that arcs around the sitter like an exoskeleton. It is a study in suspension, where the seat and backrest appear to float within the metal embrace, defying gravity with a sharp, tapered profile.

Constructed from a high-grade Birch ply core, the seat is shaped to provide ergonomic comfort while maintaining a razor-thin aesthetic. The chair captures a sense of movement even when still; the backrest flows downward into a dramatic "tail" that acts as a third leg, grounding the piece with a singular point of contact.

Structural Harmony

The warm, natural grain of the veneer—available in a curated range including the rich Walnut shown—is grounded by the cool precision of the matte black steel. The dense-walled steel tubing provides rigid stability without visual bulk, creating a silhouette that is open, airy, and incredibly strong.

Functional Sculpture

The Depeche Mode is designed to be the protagonist of a room. Whether placed as a solitary statement piece in a hallway, or paired in a listening room, it commands attention from every angle. It does not just offer a seat; it frames the sitter in a halo of steel, turning a functional object into a piece of performative art.

Why We Love It

"There is a musical quality to the curves of the Depeche Mode—it looks like a treble clef or a sound wave frozen in wood and steel. We love how the metal frame creates negative space, allowing the wood to appear impossibly light. It feels futuristic yet timeless, a true conversation starter."
