The Vienna Collector's Cabinet | Quilted Maple & Repoussé Silver

A jewel box on stilts. The Vienna Collector's Cabinet is a study in gravity-defying elegance and exquisite surface decoration. Designed by Peter Fossick, this piece lifts storage to eye level, presenting a facade of shimmering quilted maple parquetry anchored by a striking, hand-worked metallic heart.

Product Description

A Nod to the Secession If the Elson Chair pays homage to Mackintosh, the Vienna Cabinet bows to the Wiener Werkstätte. Inspired by the geometric luxury of Josef Hoffmann, this piece balances a substantial, box-like upper cabinet on impossibly slender, tapered legs. It is a daring feat of engineering that gives the heavy wooden form a sense of weightlessness.

The Art of Parquetry The cabinet face is not merely veneered; it is composed. Fossick uses Quilted Maple, a timber renowned for its "bubbled" or fluid grain structure. The veneer is hand-cut into precise squares and laid in a checkerboard parquetry pattern. This technique alternates the grain direction of each square, causing the light to dance across the surface in a rhythmic, shifting display as you move around the room.

Industrial Jewelry The focal point of the cabinet is the central escutcheon—a square of hand-repoussé metal (silvered steel or pewter) featuring a raised, bubble-like texture. This industrial "jewelry" creates a cool, tactile contrast to the warm, honey-toned wood. A matching, smaller square knob serves as the pull, reinforcing the geometric discipline of the design.

The Private Gallery Standing at chest height, this cabinet is designed for the intimate display of treasured items. Whether used as a singular drinks cabinet for rare spirits or a vault for a watch collection, it turns the act of retrieval into a ceremony.

Why We Love It

"Fossick proves here that he is a master of proportion. The legs are so slender they look like stilettos, yet the piece feels perfectly grounded. The interplay between the patterns in the wood grain and the delicate metalwork is a brilliant, subtle detail that you only notice up close. It is architectural, yet playful."
